5.2.1 Accuracy and precision

  • Accuracy describes how close the measured value is to the true value. In particular, it is affected by systematic error.
  • Precision describes the extent to which measured values for the same parameter are similar to each other when the measurement is repeated many times. In particular, it is affected by random error.

As you will now appreciate, it is not particularly helpful to have a measurement that is accurate but not precise, or precise but not accurate. You need to aim for both!
