Listening to young children: supporting transition (5 hours)

In this course, you will explore ways of listening to children in order to support their experiences of changes or transitions. Such transitions can involve many dimensions, including familiarisation with new cultural practices, the development of new relationships and potentially a shift in identity, for example, from being a 'nursery child' to being a 'pupil'. During the course you will explore how listening to children as they go through such fundamental transitions can enable adults to personalise support, and ensure children can become confident, active participants in a new setting.

Children’s experiences with digital technologies (8 hours)

This course is an introduction to how children use digital technologies, such as mobile applications, digital games and computers, and what they learn from these experiences. The course draws on debates about screen time to critically examine and present evidence about the effects of digital technologies on children’s learning and development. It concludes with a set of evidence-based recommendations about how adults (such as parents and teachers) should engage with and manage children’s interactions with technology.

Young lives: is now a good time to be young? (6 hours)

This course looks at young lives in the UK today, asking the question is this a good time to be young? It focuses on some of the factors that influence the divergent lives and complex experiences of children and young people today, taking an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the lives of children and young people. It focuses on some of the key issues in young lives such as continuing inequality and why some children and young people are more the focus of policy and intervention than others. It is written for both people working with, or intending to work with, children and young people and for those who have a more general interest in issues and debates related to children and young people.

Attachment in the early years (6 hours)

This course covers theory and research in the area of attachment in early childhood.

Play, learning and the brain (15 hours)

This course examines the area of brain-based learning, with a particular focus on the development of the young child's brain, and is of particular relevance to those who work with young children.

Partnerships and networks in work with young people (10 hours)

In this course, you will explore a range of meanings for the word 'partnership' and see that it is used to describe a range of practices, structures and processes. You will also look at some of the difficulties, as well as the potential benefits, that can come from working in partnership.
