Section 9. Teaching Pronunciation in LMOOCs

1. 1

A key question asked by many language teachers is whether LMOOCs are a good option when the objective of a course is to practice speaking skills in a foreign language supported by instant feedback. In terms of teaching pronunciation, the studies on methodological approach do not present a clear view. As a rule, teaching pronunciation in L2 (second language) includes a mixture of clear information about the phonological system, extensive practice and feedback. Various approaches to teaching with different types of feedback tend to be efficient depending on a certain context.

A successful pronunciation course, in class or online, should offer students good models of correct pronunciation, opportunities to assess their phonetics and help learners overcome possible problems. LMOOCs have been in existence for a rather short period of time, so many teachers and instructors are still wondering if such courses can provide necessary feedback that is is possible in a traditional classroom.
