Extrinsic motivators

Extrinsic motivators are rewards such as stickers, praise or grades. These are things that are given by others to motivate the child to behave in a certain way.

Intrinsic motivators

Intrinsic motivators relate to motivations from within the child. They are something that the child wants to do for themselves, either because it is something they enjoy or is a personal challenge or because they believe it is the right thing to do. An example might be of a child turning out the light because they are concerned about the impact of overuse of energy on the world, and not because they have been told to do it.

Restorative practice

Restorative practice is an approach to behaviour management that encourages children (and adults) to take responsibility for their actions. It avoids blame and encourages effective communication in order to work towards positive outcomes.


T

Traffic light system

Traffic light system for giving warnings for misbehaviour in the classroom, in a calm, non-confrontational way. Green cards for children who are working hard (especially if this is out of the norm!); orange for a first warning and reminder of the golden rules; and red for a final warning before sanctions arise. Children receiving warnings can earn a green card by getting back on task.
