Section 2. What makes an efficient LMOOC?

LMOOCs are in a start up situation. The following tips and ideas should be taken into account by designers and instructors of LMOOCs.

1. Motivate interaction and engagement

Think about the ways in which learners can study on the LMOOC platforms. If learners can socialise with each other, they are more involved in the use of language. Interaction should be the goal of learning , but not just studying the course material.

2. Facilitate self-organised learning, but do not manage it

Suggest ways that learners may organise their learning via face-to-face communication or social media, but try not to manage the groups. Learners have better chances to get organised in group without instructor's interference.

3. Create a facilitator presence

Learners have to know that there is a real instructor taking part in the MOOC. Spend time to make comments on learner discussion in LMOOC, set up a social network page to support the learners, don't forget to make regular announcements.

4. Incorporate different videos for engagement

Perceive videos as a source of authentic materials in a foreign language, not just a method to deliver lectures. Use videos as a way for students to become engaged in a language as well as in culture.

5.Think of the meaning of success

When you develop a LMOOC, consider what success means in the course. Motivate learners to think of their own targets, and the ways they will use the online course to achieve the goals.

6. Match the aims of assessment with its form

When you think about the targets of the course, think about what kind of assessment matches these targets. In case the course focus is on speaking, for instance, then assessment tasks should evaluate speaking in a meaningful way, such as oral presentations, rather than through written tasks.
