finding the right metaphor

organisational social media policy has meant my identity being locked down for the last few years. I left Twitter when it started to become abusive. I find the web presently quite aggressive with heavy advertising and very divisive, so I am now a visitor having been heavily resident in the past. I always did limit my social interaction though, because otherwise it wants ALL of my time.

Meant to say, that I'm not sure either metaphor is adequate.

Like Hannah, I think I've fitted into different places on White's continuum at different times. I do think the 'Visitors and Residents' conceptual framework offers a ore nuanced way of looking at how we behave online though and will certainly be trying to find out a bit more about David White's work. I've been doing some research into online trolling behaviour as part of another course and certainly the identities that individuals adopt online are really interesting - particularly whether or not these identities encourage us to engage collaboratively or destructively....

I do think White's point about whether our assumed 'digital natives' are always equipped to engage effectively online (eg spotting 'fake news') is one that I'd like educators look into more ....
