Layout

One last thought that I was drawn to during this course relates to the importance of space, place, and the layout.  Seeing space through the eyes of children is imperative to ensure a happy environment - physically, visually, and emotionally.  Involving children in decision-making is key to ensure that the spaces especially work for them.  Having a variety of spaces, allowing children to mold a place specific to their needs is crucial.  As an interior designer (my other professional hat) - the impact design, colour, lighting, and functionality have on people and in the context of early years, on children, can often be underestimated and overlooked. Ensuring accessibility, maneuverability, comfort, flexibility, and adaptability in design terms will go a long way to removing visible and invisible barriers.
