The successful integration of ICT into the learning environment depends on the ability of teachers to structure learning in new ways, to merge technology appropriately with a pedagogy, develop socially active classrooms, and encourage co-operative interaction and collaborative learning and group work.
For many, this requires a different set of skills from those they currently possess, especially when they are not all that experienced on what to do. People are limited in what they don't know because you cannot give what you don't have. Once you can successfully integrate ICT into learning environment, t makes the learning process easy & friendly.
This is reflected in Activity 3.1, Case Study 1 Mr Shabukali’s story. It was mentioned in the story that school has just installed digital projectors and all staff are being encouraged to use them in their classes. But Mr Shabukali is not very happy about this because he is not very experienced with using technology, but decides that he will make a PowerPoint for his next English lesson. He made mistakes in some slides during the presentation due to his limitations and imperfect way of preparing power-point presentations as follows:
1) The table he made in the slides was not legible enough for students at the back of the class to see so that they can copy it in their notebooks as instructed by him. Mr Shabukali is a very strict teacher and the students are nervous about telling him so they saidnothing.
2) He later sat at his desk looking at his laptop and realized that he has made two mistakes on the first slide and the next slide, though the students did not notice.
3) He quickly switched off the laptop and tells the students to open their books and do the exercise on page 21.
4) Because he is a very strict teacher, he did not:
a)develop socially active classrooms
b)encourage co-operative interaction and collaborative learning
c)group work.
All he needed to do had it been he is very experienced/computer literate was:
1) developed the little skill & knowledge he has on computer to make manipulation easy for him in the preparation of lessons on power point.
2) Increase the font size of the table in the slides and also press ctrl F5 or the small icon looking like a small cup on the downward part of the computer on the right hand size to expand each slide for projection and presentation.
3) To end the show and correct the mistakes on the particular slide, save the corrections & then click again to expand the slides for projection and presentation.
4) Create an enabling, friendly and active learning environment.
