The policy maker first, need to accept  that technology must be integrated into teaching and learning, imagine where a student can not use phone in school, how come he will be able to practice some stuffs he thinks off or seek his teachers attention. So our policy need to be innovatively fashioned

To use OER you don't need integrated technology. If you can access OER as a teacher educator, you can use the ideas in the OER to show students what LCE is and what it feels like for learners. This is so important.

Which make me to remember a case in Ogun State Nigeria where a student was seen with a phone in one of the private school, she was beaten seriously and the phone was broken

I am skeptical about the use of phone by students, especially the young ones in primary schools. The disadvantage in terms of distractions may outweigh the advantages. The teacher alone can use it at this stage to teach the students to help them to concentrate better.

The use of phones in classrooms is highlight debated, even at governmental level.

I wonder, what happened  when radio made its entrance in the classroom. What about the computer labs? There was a debate as to whether the pupils would explore other areas than the one(s) required.

And yes, we do need to consider these questions carefully. We do need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages, and make the decision which is appropriate for us, our class, our school.

If we adopt new ways of doing things, we must think of ground rules extremely carefully. TESSA advocates setting ground rules for the classroom with the pupils. May be we need to do the same for ground rules for the use of technologies?

This is very correct. Even the institutions have to adopt the ideas before we can implement.

I will begin by impressing the idea and the significance of what LCE is on the decision makers. I will back this up with relevant statistics from institutions that are already into the idea.

Then I will attempt to convince them not wasting scarce resources on re-inventing the wheel as far as LCE teaching approach is concerned. I will present the idea of OER, what it can be used for and how it can be used in pursuing the idea of LCE.

Once these are achieved, the process of internalizing and and operationalizing the concept of OER can ensue. This mean organizing series of seminar where the various concept are presented to colleagues and then workshops in which the concepts can be practicalized. That is, the medium being the message.

I support your idea of using TESSA OER in teacher education because of lack of knowledge on how teacher educator can help trainees plan and teach effectively.

I will first need to learn more about OER, then see how best we can use them in our teacher training program. Their use I believe will help our students access a variety of learning materials.

The other point is that we have to make our students appreciate the use of technology before we get to using OER.

Although OER repositories are held online, they can be used offline too. As a teacher educator you can use them to inspire and develop your own practice, share links with student teachers. We can't let technology get in the way of progress!!

In my context, this has been incorporated. Our University been am ODL institution has OER policy. Our Course Materials are under OER policy.

However, in the aspect of training teachers,  we encourage departments to ensure that teachers developing a course material should first check some repository and partner institution if we can select and adapt a material instead of re-inventing the wheel and also for cost savings.

I plan to integrate OER in my teaching by first identifying the relevant information that I want to pass to my students, then secondly search for the OER sources that will provide the kind of information and finally provide the links for my students to access on their own.

Integrating OER

ICT and OER – particularly the TESSA OER – can be used to support the vision for teacher education. As an individual, you can initiate change by using OER and ICT in own practice. These changes therefore need to be integrated into programmes by embedding the principles behind active teaching and learning.

A teacher must be very dynamic and articulate to do the above, that is thinking of a change - paradigm shift from the normal/common teaching methods.

This is not different from what Joacim, the Zonal In-service  Coordinator did in Activity 4.5, Case Study 1. He is confident about his own subject knowledge but it is a long time since he has taught fractions in maths in school. So, he consulted the school curriculum and found a reference to a TESSA unit about fractions. He then used the ideas in the TESSA unit to teach the teachers.

By doing this, he Identified learning need which is the motivation for searching, link to goals and development needs. He searched for suitable OER to support development needs and then selected the OER and judging that the OERs are suitable for use and can be adapted for the intended teaching and learning context.

He then adapted and refined/modified the OER to use in context, refining it after evaluating its use to support learning.

I have come to realize learn that all what i have been engaging in during teacher trainings all this while are all part of integrating OER as it had led to new practices, not simply finding them!

I strongly agree with you that a teacher must be very dynamic and articulate to engage ICT and TESSA OER in the day-to-day practices of teaching and learning. Hence, Teacher educators must model the practice.

This platform has indeed provided me with the necessary skills and knowledge I need for me to integrate OER in my teaching/ lecturing. But will firstly need to know more by reading those materials thoroughly in order for me to adapt OER effectively in NY teaching/ lecturing. Secondly, a conducive environment must be created especially on the part of the policy markers, our learners are supposed to be allowed to use the necessary gadgets in institutions if at all we want this integration of OER to bear its intended fruits.

Very true. But if our policy makers are not forthcoming with the necessary facilities for conducive learning, we can improvise or seek support of stakeholders who are ready to invest in education.

In order to integrate OER into teacher training it's important to emphasis the use of various resources to the student teachers and not only the ones provided in the course modules. To do this, one has to be the model teacher by using the various OER themselves so that they can easily refer to them in lessons and provide them as reference in applicable courses.

For example when teaching Teaching Methodology to Student teachers, a teacher trainer can use the Tessa OER, specifically the Key Resources, as a guide to how to develop the Learner- Centred approach pedagogy. The Key resources can be used by the teacher trainer as a model of a real classroom situation.

Totally agree Mulemba. Modelling the approaches and using OER is very important. It gives student teachers experience of the approaches as learners and this influences what they do with their leaners.

Thanks Elizabeth. I think it's a good idea to share OERs with your students in your activities and for your own work. Could you also ask the students to select and share OERs and evaluate them for different purposes?

I have liked the qualities of a useful OER.

When you find some, they are really very helpful!

They significantly reduce on your lesson preparation time and provide for what is believed are tested activities.

The other benefit is the student teachers can also be guided to find them.

So, Jacqueline, are you saying that we should consider replacing parts of the course/programme we  teach by equivalent content/strategies we have discovered in OERs libraries?

Currently i am working on my institution website. I created a e-Campus on the site; Khan Academy, World digital Library, UNESCO digital Library and others.  The site will be completed soon and i intend to train teacher educators on how to use the OER on the site in their teaching.

That sounds like a fantastic resource. Will you also be thinking about how to help student teachers find and evaluate other OERs?

I agree gradually incorporating OERs in the activities our students will engage with, and building assessment tasks / assignments that will make them use OERs will make them appreciate what OERs have to offer and how they can contribute to their professional learning and life.

As a teacher, I need to learn more about OER, in other to have a better understanding of it. This will enable me to plan well on how best to integrate it , in my teacher training programme.
I will also ensure that the teachers and students are computer literate, before integrating OER in my teacher training programme.
