Students and students teachers often have more knowledge and experience of ICT than teachers and teacher educators. Effectively, embedding ICT requires learner centered attitudes and values .
There is need for teacher educators to be computer literate. This will enable the teacher to make sure that everyone can effectivly participate during power point presentation. The teacher who is not well computerized will not know how to use the screen or to walk around the room. There will then be the need to enlarge the Screens
Teachers who are computer literate will be able to manage the Power point presentation very wel l will carry all the learners along. Ensuring that the learners are in groups and can fully participate fully.
It therefore follows that the successful integration of ICT into the learning environment will depend on the ability of teachers to structure learning in new ways, to merge technology opportunity with a pedagogy, develop socially active classrooms and encourage cooperative learning and group work.
The knowledge base of the teacher educator, the student teacher and availability of OERs are key in ICT integration in teaching and learning.
Chizola, that's right. Come to think of it. Most of the powerpoint presentations made by colleague teachers and or teacher educators are far from creating a learner centred environment to allow the learner freedom to take charge of their own learning actively at their own pace. Thanks to this course and to Open University and ACDE and all other partners who brought us on board, things will not be the same again
This couldn't have been put better. The new ways of teaching with OCR's are becoming more interactive, exciting and completely fresh. It carries the entire student body along and I must say, if this new way of knowledge impartation is embraced in Nigeria. Brighter minds will be churned out by the thousands.
I think you are right Bonface. PowerPoint is not the route to learner centred education. if it is just used as a sophisticated blackboard with the teacher doing all the work and lecturing, then we are no further forward. There is an expression 'death by PowerPoint'. Imagine being a learner in school and going from one PowerPoint lesson to another!!! How boring. PPT can be used well and support a learner-centred approach but like Chizobe says, training is needed. Otherwise, teachers use technology in ineffective ways.
well, thats true that some students are computer literate in comparison to there teachers but the teacher is still the teacher and therefore teachers should find forum thats encourages improvements in there professionalism.
Adaugo, this reminds me of one of my colleagues's saying: "The best teachers are life-long learners. They never stop learning."
For a better future in education, ICT drives the change of education and makes lives more convenient, however when it comes to ICT content knowledge(knowing how to use) is more important then the devices.
Totally Scholastica! Knowing when and how to use ICT appropriately to enhance learning is key.
Exactly. Teachers are meant to upgrade their lliteracy in the use of computer. Moreso, successful integration of ICTs in the learning environment, are also a Transformational tool that has promoted the shift to a learner- centered environment. It has assisted in improving the quality of education and training by increasing learner's motivation and engagement, facilitating the acquisition of basic skills.
