GROUP WORK

Group work is very important in improving or working on self worth,self confident ,self esteem and self efficancy of a student especially in those with disabilities.Group work in another regard ,make teaching easier for teacher educator .This is because at this point theres a leader and folowers and so learner centered education is achieved.

Group work is good, it helps the slow learner to catch up and fast learner have better understanding of the subject , though the group has to be created in such a way that they have same zeal and passion for seeking better understanding

Indeed. Group work enables students whose learning pace are not as fast as others to learn on an even playing field. However conscious effort should to taken towards mixing students of varying academic prowess.

I agree that how groups are formed is important. But also very important is the task that is set. It needs to be linked to learning outcomes and be appropriately challenging. Just asking students to work in groups will not guarantee learning. The TESSA OER (and others) have examples of group work activities that can be adapted for different subjects and ages.

I do agree with Kris 'reflection here. Group work is good and can enhance learning if the facilitator (teacher/teacher educator) has in mind the clear and understandable instructions about the task to be completed by the groups. Also he/she should bear in mind the composition of the groups ,the type of tasks to be completed and how s/he is going to be managing them during this task completion to a successful end. I would sum it up by just saying that it takes a whole lot of other skills from a facilatator to get groups set up and working successfully.

I agree, and want to add that adequate preparation of the groups for their tasks is also important. clarity of tasks , roles and responsibilities, coordination of group activities and transitioning between whole class to groups and back and 'putting it all together' are also important

Group work motivates learners to participate in the teaching learning process and through social interaction they are able to individually develop cognitive ability.

I agree Elizabeth that the social interaction can help learners to gain new understanding. I think this is most effective if the teacher shapes the group work around key tasks and questions- as suggested by Kris. Open ended questions can offer the group something to work on but they will also need clear roles and support to work together effectively.
