Open Educational Resources

OER & the Internet has made it easier for every one to share contents across the world.

Educators and learners have been able to source  and share and also adapt/adopt materials.

The user does not  need permission from the authors to use the resources. Just to reference it to avoid plagiarism.

I have really benefitted from OER whrer there is no old system of library.

You are very right. I hope our academic colleagues in our clime here are really taking the advantage it provides and still portends to the fullest. Hopefully the NTI facilitators of various courses under the NTI programmers are Counseling the students on their courses to go OER to mark up their learning and support the NTI course materials.

From case studies in TESSA OERs a  teacher and teacher educator, through personal initiative or working as a team, could figure out how to conduct active learning using the standard national curriculum. I have found it possible and others have too found it possible.

Ojo and Oyodeji, you're on point. There's a paradigm shift. OER and Internet is revolutionising education the world over. It's connecting us. Big thanks ro the Open University of Uk for this platform

OERs exist independently from the Internet and can be used away from the Internet

Hello, John! I am sure you have found them as you worked through the course, but just in case, a good introduction to the TESSA resources is the video in activity 1.7 on https://www.open.edu/openlearncreate/mod/oucontent/view.php?id=142384&section=6

It will be helpful if the facilitators can encourage these potential teachers to make use of  OER but how many are aware of this window opportunity.

In furtherance to this, I want to suggest that before refering your student, you must check the resources yourself in other to properly and appropriately guide the students

You are right to point out that resources might not be suitable for students. But lecturers cannot check everything. As well as recommending some OER for your students, you also need to teach them how to critically review things they might find, and decide whether it meets their needs.

Kris, I want to key into what Omuya wrote and your comments too. The resources might not be suitable, but not available for the students to access to know if it is suitable. In a good setting where the level of the students knowledge matches the materials online or the resources that are available for the students to research upon, then the teacher educator can make reference to the educational resources. In some part of Africa, the teachers would do extra work in making the resources available for the student teachers or students to be used.

You are right Kris. In addition the TESSA OERs have case studies which have student teachers to figure out how to make their own lessons engaging.

I think this is the most important thing because you can only lead others if you know where to go. the students will often follow what their lecturers are doing. However, students need also interact with the OERs and then select those that might be relevant any different times

On OER

This goes to show that we live in a knowledge society however, just because information is readily available doesn't mean that it is being used appropriately. With a lot of databases at our disposal, we need to teach your students on how to search for relevant information in the shortest time possible. This will go a long way in improving their research skills as well.

Oduori, though there is available information in OER, i am anxious to get more skills on how to filter to get relevant information  and from a reputable source in the shortest time possible.

Concerning the permission to reproduce or adapt OERs, it is worth checking the licence under which they have been published, Mobolaji.

This has really helped in the area of teaching and learning  because teachers don't need to go on reading hardcover materials but simply search online for  relevant  materials and use them approximately

I also think the ultimate idea is to ensure that every teacher is convinced that OERs are important and can be used with modifications where need arises. other teachers have limited access to internet as well

Helen Hendry Post 16 in reply to 15

Yes John, I agree. Helping teachers to engage with OERs on and offline and to select and use them critically is really important.

This course should help you discover a range of OER libraries / repositories  that will be supportive and useful. It will also provide the tools to help you evaluate OER repositories.
