What technology do you already have. I got relieved to know that I do not have to worry about expensive computers and other gadgets which are very expensive for us in Africa but to think simply about basic equipment teachers and learners may already have. This w as motivating to me to go online.
Good point, Ignatius. Technology covers a wide array of hardware, software and skills!
Could I please encourage all of you to indicate which activity of the course you are tackling / answering when you start a new thread.
To take teaching online, everyone must be on the same Page, the government must be on the center stage to facilitate all of these , internet must be highly subsidised for things to work well
in taking your teaching online,in as much as i agree that all hands must be on deck and the need for government to provide subsidised internet, more importantly is the ability of the trainer/teacher to be able to use the tools appropriately and effectively. Therefore it calls for more training.
I agree, Sefinat, training is crucial. One of the issues I met as a head of department was on how to build up confidence in colleagues who, despite having been trained and handling hardware, software and pedagogy of learning well felt very unconfident and very diffident. I would really value reading your ideas / suggestions on how we could overcome this (what I would call) fear of the unknown in terms of teaching.
Interesting, Doris. I think it might also be useful to think of how to provide secure support for colleagues who may feel threatened or insecure in using new/different ways of doing things. Working in pairs or in small groups often helps even those who are very experienced in other fields.
When taking teaching online, whether one is a tertiary institution educators, a teacher educator or a school classroom teacher, the appropriate choice of the available technology is crucial. We need to start where we are of simple technology and build it up gradually. An internet enabled phone and a set of apps can suffice at the start regardless of the teachers' circumstances and endowments.
Agreed, Franci. On a par with starting with where we are in terms of technology gadgets, I would say we also need to start at a level of technological competence commensurate where colleagues / students / learners are.
The UNESCO ICT framework provides some ways forward to support us in this task. I would for instance be really interested in working on sections of Table 1: Scope of professional development standards for ICT competencies for teachers using the ICT CFT as a starting point (p. 51), to build a hand-on programme for my students.
My feeling is that those of us who are proficient users of ICT and IT often forget how challenging, frustrating, down-heartening it used to be when we were taking our first steps in the new field.
Correct Prof, We got enough technology around us already to help carry out the learner centred curriculum
This is true. Technology all serve for one purpose.
The technology I already have are as follows:
A. A desktop computer
B. A digital camera for showcasing work in film on photographs and
C. A projector
