What is Learner-centered Education?
Learner-centered education (LCE) is all about an
entirely new way of seeing, thinking about, and acting on education.
Learner-centred education is
also an approach that places the learner at the centre of the learning. This means
that the learner or student is responsible for learning while the
tutor is responsible for facilitating the learning.
It focuses on 3 key aspects about the learner:
1) Each learner is seen as
being unique in meaningful ways. They have unique backgrounds,
circumstances, and starting points with unique strengths, challenges,
interests, and aspirations. All of these unique attributes call for unique
responses from their learning system.
2) Each learner is seen as
having unbounded potential—potential that will unfold at its own pace
and in its own way. Every single learner is a wonder to behold, and
3) Each learner is seen as having an innate desire to learn. The job of the education system is to unleash that desire.
What are the benefits of Learner-centered Education?
Learning becomes an active search for meaning by the learner
and constructed rather than passively received.
I very much like you your elaborated and structured answer to this question with a lot of interesting points on the benefits of LCE .I really like the idea of co- construction of knowledge in LCE by both the learner and the facilitator as you summarized it in the very last section of your post.
I agree with your analysis, Sabankilie! Bravo, Mobolaji for your clear vision.
The co-construction of knowledge is an important part of LCE, and many consider this approach as a 'democratic, horizontal approach to teaching and learning.'
I agree with your. Also learner centered education is important because it's about an entirely new way of seeing, thinking about, and acting on education. The learner is at the center of the education process and actively engaged in his/her own learning.
