Role of ICT in education

ICT in education improves engagement and knowledge retention: When ICT is integrated into lessons, students become more engaged in their work. This is because technology provides different opportunities to make it more fun and enjoyable in terms of teaching the same things in different ways.

I cant agree less with you Simeon as to what you said pertaining to the role of ICT in education. In addition to what you have already said in terms of students engagement , motivation and enhancement of learning. We can also add the comfort of approaching teaching and learning with the use of these tools and most importantly the democratization of power sharing as knowledge is henceforth co-constructed by both the students and the teachers with mutual respect . ICTs have actually revolutionize education in the sense that teachers and learners are no more required to be geographically located at the same venue at the same time for teaching and learning to take place as we all know now. Purely traditional classroom format with the teacher at the chalkboard in the front stage and the students at the back stage following what he/she has to say is dwindling to an end with the use of ICT education and the list goes on if we just continue the reflection.

I agree with your summations. One of the exciting aspect of integrating ICT into classroom experience is that both teacher and students learn in the process.

Sure, ICT has greatly the capacity for teaching and learning, thus widening the scope of the quality of education. There is more engagement and interaction between teachers and learners no matter where they are or what time it is around the globe.

Definitely so! So from what you all say, we need to advocate the use of ICT to enhance education and even make education evolve and become more accessible to all. But are the issues of equity still with us? Is the access to ICT and education the same for all? rural v. urban, well-off v. poor?

This is a question that has been asked in many places in the Fora on this course. How do we resolve this important issue of equity?

I believe that we can make have some form of equity by making a list of the available ICT resources in both rural and urban set ups then making the most of the available resources. I basic resources such as radio and mobile phone with camera could are largely available. Start from here and move on to other resources.

Moving forward I also think governments should now plan (budget) for use of ICT in view its benefits in enhancing the teaching and learning process.

That is true. ICT makes learning a fun when students have ICT knowledge.

I can't help wondering about ICT for normadic maginalised communities, who have barely any resources to enhace ICT skills. The government needs to step in and provide devices to enable these children to also learn.

There are real issues of equity in the distribution and use of ICT facilities and capabilities, and I would say in a lot of countries in the world.

I agree with you Simeon. ICT does possess the capacity and capability to help our educational environments function better, more effectively and efficiently too.
