This is the case, Felicia, a learning classroom can become a noisy classroom, and this might be another skills we, as teachers / educators, need to develop: recognising the difference between the constructive noise of learning and the noise of distraction.
Our role as monitor during learning activities is crucial. At the Open University, we used to use this phrase "Monitoring by walking around (MBWA)". Walking around the classroom enables the teacher to make sure that everybody has understood the instruction and is on task. It enables the teacher to support learners/groups that encounter a difficulty and to push everybody to move their understanding, skill or thoughts a little further. It enables the teacher to bring straying individuals/groups back on track.
I do love a busy class full of learning noise, and as the teacher/facilitator, I make it my role to ensure that the noise is a learning noise.
