Teaching strategies

Appreciating learner centered education will need transforming the minds of teachers and students especially at University level and adopting teaching strategies that engage students positively.

More often than not university teachers do not see the necessity for LCE, always thinking that university students are supposed to be independent learners. However, LCE does not mean a loss of independence, rather it means that students are actively involved in creating their won knowledge as they are offered the space to express their perspectives about the matters under discussion.

Good point Felix. Encouraging students in higher education to be independent learners is important, but there is a fine line between independent learning and abandoning responsibility as a teacher! Being a learner centred university teacher involves providing the opportunities and framework for learning.

Correct Jacquie,

This perception is the elephant in the room. We need to shift. In Secondary schools, the learning becomes exam oriented. We teach for excellence in the final exam. So the learners are treated mostly like empty slates or rather tabula rasa, just to be fed with knowledge. We got a job in our hands

Good one indeed. It will also broaden their minds, on the relevant skills needed in teaching effectively.

Good elaboration of teaching strategies that bring out LCE was very helpful.
