A calculation of the value of an investment, eg proposed thermal improvement to a building, in relation to its cost;  such calculations must compare like with like, eg the total current cost against the current equivalent value of any estimated future savings, or the equivalent annual cost against the estimated annual savings (eg by calculating the discounted cash flow).
