The image shows the development of a soybean seed. It starts with a diagram of a flowering plant, then a magnified image showing the flower’s pistil, the site of fertilisation. It shows how the embryo, tiny at first, grows into a heart shape during the stage of cell division, then expands to form cotyledons during the stage of cell maturation. In the final stage, drying, water is lost and as it dries the colour changes from green to yellow to brown. The result is a dormant seed, capable of germinating when conditions are right.
