11 Advice on e-safety for children with special educational needs (SEN)

Childnet International has produced a series of resources for children with special educational needs (SEN) who are potentially more vulnerable and more at risk than others when using ICT. For example, children with SEN or disabilities may be vulnerable to being bullied through the internet, they may not recognise that they are being bullied or they may not appreciate how their own online behaviour could be seen by someone else as bullying. There is also the issue that some children may not know how to make judgements about what is safe information to share and why they should not trust others on the internet.

Reflection

It is important to that your school's special education needs co-ordinator (SENCO) develops strategies for safe internet use as part of individual childrens’ learning plans.

Think about the other members of the school staff, such as those who work with individual children or in the playground. Do they know the importance of e-safety and listening to children about how they use the internet?
