Whitby is rich in history. It is flanked by moors and is situated at the mouth of the River Esk where it flows into the North Sea. Its historic port and fishing harbour was once a centre for shipbuilding and whaling, and the construction of the piers was essential to protect the harbour from severe gales.

The pier and harbour wall were probably built in the 14th century and enabled the safe harbour to become a major wool exporter in the Middle Ages. It also imported coal for the Alum trade, ironstone and lime.

Long sandy beaches and beautiful surrounding countryside form part of the Heritage Coast, attracting many tourists.
The harbour side has many tourist attractions, but the fishing industry continues along the quaysides. Shipping has always played an important part in the life of Whitby and it was in a Whitby built ship that Captain Cook sailed on his voyages of discovery.

On the West Cliff are some fine hotels and gardens with a Spa complex offering facilities for different types of entertainment, including a theatre.

Whitby is also well known for its Jet jewellery; at its most fashionable during Queen Victoria’s period of mourning, and still on sale in many shops.
