I think everyone can pick up something new from this course regardless of how long you may have "done the job."
Has helped me to reflect on practise and the links to resources have been very helpful.
Great course - you can go at your own pace and stop when you need to. Good introduction to inclusive practise and the needs of dyslexic pupils - and how we can help them.
Whilst the course was informative it took me a while to get around the links as unfortunately IT is not my best skill but I am learning every day. Perhaps a little more explanation would help especially as the links to the quizzes wouldn't work (I was on line) so I had to find alternative ways, but I got there in the end.
The course dyslexia and inclusive practice is very informative and educative.
Compare to my initial knowledge of it. I now know more about the dyslexia and inclusive practice
Really useful and enlightening course - I learned lots about my hitherto assumptions about dyslexia, and feel this will really postively inform my practice going forward - thanks.
I found this course very insightful, allowing me to reflect on my previous understanding and experience of Dyslexia. I have always been a great supporter of inclusion for all, but realise that to achieve that wish there is still a very long way to go.
The course content is great, once you find your way around.
I chose to do my learning log using word. This meant I wasn't able to have my work tracked. There must be a way, other than cut and paste to upload it?
Gaining better understanding means we have tools at the ready. The classroom is always going to be a minefield, but if we have knowledge based on study and practice, I feel ready to step onward.
I've been teaching for 25 years. I chose to do my thesis (when studying for the then honours part of the B.ed (Hons) on the emotional impact of dyslexia on children. I studied and researched so much my head felt like bursting. This course has opened that door again. You never stop learning, no matter your age or circumstance. Go for it.
Now I need to find the next two modules that go with this.
Can be a bit confusing to navigate the entire section as there is so much information in each module of the course.
Quizzes were a challenge, difficult to find information on topics which were taken from the other modules when completing the quiz.
Great stage by stage modules. Plenty diagrams full of information. Not too difficult to read/understand as wasn't overloaded with Educational/Government Acts.
The course was a true eye-opener into the world of Dyslexia. I was really reminded of the close-knit communiy of Practioners needed to form a foundation for the detecting and educating of the learner. It was amazing to learn of the ways in which inclusion can be allowed in mainstream and how homework can “ make or break “ a child’s learning at home with family.
this will help me to improve support of pupils and has given me more understanding of dyslexia and how chidren learn. I hope this helps me to close the gaps within chidrens learning
I already have an OU account when a did a degree. However, I can't seem to link this course to my others on student home. At the moment I am struggling to pick up from yesterday- it won't let me carry on- confusing
It has given me a more in depth view on other factors which are associated with the term Dyslexia .It will help me to look for other factors /signs so early intervention can be accessed so to give the child the best support in the learning environment.
As this is my first time of learning about dyslexia, I find the information very useful and detailed.
I understand the relationship between phonics and dyslexia better and why some students struggle in assessing the curriculum.
It is essential for me to conclude this course, as some of the students l support are dyslexic.
This course is full of information, well worth the read but is not very consumer friendly to those with Dyslexia.
I have 23 words to now look up in my dictionary; words like - Strephosymbolia and Neuroanatomical to name but a few.
I will complete this course as I believe it's in the best interest for the students I support.
This course has given me a more in-depth understanding of dyslexia, but as a TA I found that some of it was not relevant to me. Also some of the links did not open so when asked about the Route had no idea because I couldn't read it.
I am a Teaching Assistant in Year 1 at a primary school sharing looking after a child with Autism and general TA work. I was asked to undertake this course during the Covid 19 outbreak. Whilst I have found the course very interesting, I'm not that quite a lot of the content is suitable for TA's. There is a lot of content we are not familiar with and at times I felt quite stressed trying to think of answers and things to write in the log. That said I have definitely expanded my knowledge of Dyslexia which is what i had hoped to achieve.
This course was informative as an introduction to this topic, I did find it a little difficult to navigate my way around the material. Not all was relevant to my practice but I will be able to use aspects. Thank you.
Module 1-
undertaking study of this module allowed me to tune back into the systems and supports available for helping with the identification and supporting of children with dyslexia. It also highlighted the legislation and policy guidance available, as well as the different organisations and resources available to help teachers in the classroom.
As the ASN co-ordinator for the school, I found this a good refresher and useful tool for developing and providing an holistic approach for supporting dyslexic learners in school.
I found this course very informative and it has made me think more. Each learner is an individual and no two learners are the same. What may work for may not work for the other.
Found the information interesting and will now look at how I, as a teaching assistant, can help support all children with additional educational needs.
It was an interesting course and provided lots of useful information.
I found some of the chapters too long and thought some of the information could have been more summarised and presented in different ways.
It was a wonderful course to complete. Gave me further insight on what can go through the minds of children, young people and their loved ones.
However, some of the questions in a quiz were based on topics that came in later sections. Furthermore, there were quizzes to complete at the end of section 1 and 5 but when I went to complete the end of module quiz then I discovered I did not need to as I had already attempted it.
So for improvement please be clearer with the order of quizzes.
it really helps me to learn more about dyslexia and what are the steps you have to follow so you can support them to a positive and sustained destination.
I found the course itself highly informative and rather challenging in some task areas, although, especially considering this course is to inform and even teach people how to present tasks and subjects in a dyslexia friendly manner, I found however, there was an information overload when presenting information online. I realise it may be my own dyspraxia and dyslexia kicking in but, as I have moved through the introduction course, I have found myself learning how to overcome the difficulties of presentation and I can now approach things in a calm manner to help me learn effectively. Making the screen bigger when viewing work online has been a fantastic help to me which makes me think I will be able to understand and help learners with dyslexia an/or other developmental problems too.
Very useful and informative, but not very well-built. I couldn't see my certificate of completion, which apparently lots of people had issues with as well.
An informative and useful course focusing on self reflection. However, I am at 100% completed but can't see my digital badge or any recognition for my work which is a shame.
Very useful resources to accompany the course. A good summary of the support materials already out there and presented in an easy to use fashion with quizzes to consolidate learning and test understanding.
Having attended the masterclass day in Inverness in Nov 2017, this was an excellent way to consolidate what I'd learnt there while reflecting on my practice since then. It's a straightforward course which has really helped my confidence in being part of the identification process and in supporting all my pupils in an inclusive manner. It also clarified my understanding of current legislation and pathways for identifying dyslexia. I am a class teacher but due to my own interest in literacy and language I have now enrolled on the second module, which looks more challenging.
I didn't have any technical issues other than the glossary problem mentioned by others and the fact that the links to the Education Scotland pages are broken, presumably due to all the recent changes to the Ed Scot website.
I enjoyed taking part in this online learning course as it caused me to think about current national and council policies relating to inclusive practice. I found it beneficial to review the range of support strategies that can be used with young people with Dyslexia and the links to further reading were helpful also. I would like to go on to complete Module 2 as I feel these study opportunities will have a positive impact on my teaching practice.
A few technical difficulties experienced which were frustrating. When you click on a glossary term it takes you to the glossary page with the full definition - however, when you click on 'Previous' it doesn't take you to the page you were working on, as expected. As with other reviewers,I am recorded as completing only 75% of module 1. I have completed the quizzes but have been unable to access course content when returning to finish the module on a different date. Overall, informative.
Please note: if you download the Word or PDF version of the learning materials to study offline and return to complete the quizzes, you will need to click through the online version of the learning materials to complete the criteria for your digital badge.
OpenLearn Create does not synchronise with your offline studying of downloaded materials, so is unable to track your progress when you are studying the materials offline. The site FAQs are being updated with this information and this message is also clearly displayed on the home page of this course.
Whilst I stand by my previous review I also acknowledge the frustration of the other users who have found themselves only able to complete the course to 75%. This is frustrating and hopefully will be resolved however there does not appear to be a reporting mechanism or FAQ response.
A very well-structured course providing a wide variety of useful information, resources and activities, giving the learner a better knowledge and understanding about Dyslexia and Inclusive Practice. Well done!!!
Good information about this disability and how it is identified in pupils. Should be mandatory for all teachers in primary and secondary schools to receive training in this field as it is more and more common and many pupils do not get the support that they deserve in classes.
There were a couple of anomalies in the course and the answers and I also thought the questions in the quizzes where you had to drag and drop were not "dyslexic" friendly as many of the answers were very similar.
Excellent content. With just a few technical difficulties to overcome, this will be a rewarding and informative course.
As with one other reviewer,I am recorded as completing only 75% of module 1. I have completed the quizzes but have been unable to access course content when returning to finish the module on a different date.
Once these glitches are sorted, I will be highly recommending this module.
Content of the course was excellent - very informative.
Just a couple of technical things;
1. When you click on a glossary term is takes you to the glossary page with the full definition - however, when you click on 'Previous' it doesn't take you to the page you were working on, as expected.
2. Is there any chance that the correct answer is displayed after completion of the quiz?
3. When you click on 'Return to module' after completing a quiz it takes you back to the top of the page of where you were which is slightly confusing - would be better if this link took you to the bottom of that page or possibly the start of the next section?
Thank you for a great introduction to Dyslexia and information on Scotland's line in terms of support - can't wait to do the next module.
The course itself is useful and I did enjoy the reading activities and I did find the information and reflective tools useful. However, my enjoyment was significantly superseded by frustration - on finding the course one I had logged in. Different parts were saying I was enrolled but I could not find a link to click on to access the course. Equally, when searching for the course, it did not come up as option. Much time was wasted searching, trying to locate the course to actually do anything. Also, when I clicked on the links for the additional resources such as the writing circles or quizzes, nothing came up. Finally, due to great perseverance and a full Sunday spent overcoming the difficulties, I did finally manage to complete all the reading, activities and online quizzes to then discover I had only 75% completed the course, whilst having no option of doing any further activities to see the entire module complete. Very disappointed at the time wasted due to technical issues with the site.
The content of this course is really exceptional and to the point. I would recommend it to others. I found the site clunky and hard to work out what to do next and where to go. I think I have completed all parts of the reading and the quizzes but it's not clear whether I've 'finished'.
