Fossil Fuel Retirement Model
The course provides participants with the training and skills to assess economic and financial issues that may arise when retiring fossil fuel assets in the power sector. This is particularly relevant in the context of emerging and developing economies (EMDEs). The course introduces the Fossil Fuel Retirement Model (FFRM), an open-source Python-based financial modelling tool with an Excel interface to estimate the stranded costs associated with retiring fossil fuel power plants. The tool can be used to develop financial and economic insights to inform a power utility’s fossil fuel retirement strategy and inform policy makers in both regulated and liberalized electricity markets. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to apply the FFRM across various electricity market structures to assess the financial and economic needs of climate-aligned transitions.
This is the March 2026 presentation of the course.
