Effective monitoring and evaluation are necessary to assess the impacts of rewilding and adapt management strategies.
In Module 2, you learned about measuring ecological integrity using the Rewilding Score. The Rewilding Score provides an excellent overview of the condition of an area that can be replicated over time and compared to areas outside a rewilding landscape.
Rewilders often supplement the Rewilding Score with more specific monitoring for ecological changes and socio-economic impacts, using a wide variety of tools and technologies.
Activity: Monitoring methods and approaches
Allow 5 minutes
Make notes in the box about any monitoring methods or approaches that you are aware of, that you think could be relevant to rewilding
Some of the ways we have identified for monitoring include:
Ecological monitoring: using technologies such as remote sensing, GPS, long-term surveys, and citizen science to understand the long-term ecological impacts of rewilding and support adaptive management.
Socio-economic monitoring: using knowledge, attitude and practice surveys and economic data to understand the impacts of rewilding on people's perspectives and behaviours, and on local economies.
