Lesson 5.3: Creative resistance

View

In this topic, we focus on the cultural and affective strategies that challenge anti-gender narratives through meaning-making, symbolism, playfulness, and imagination.

1. What is creative resistance?

Creativity is a powerful tool of resistance

When public debate narrows, when institutions silence dissent, or when visibility becomes dangerous, queer, trans, and feminist activists turn to art, humour, satire, and performance to speak back.

Creative resistance communicates critique in ways that laws or petitions cannot: it disrupts moral panic, reframes debate, and allows people to imagine collective futures that go beyond the limits of the present.

Creative resistance:

  • keeps political memory alive
  • builds solidarity
  • creates channels of expression when protest is unsafe
  •  shifts public emotion from fear to possibility
  • makes complexity accessible through imagery, humour, and storytelling
