Where do birds live?

View

Scotland has a lot of farmland, and this is perfect for some birds in particular.

Do you remember why Skylarks like living on farmland? (click here to reveal)

They are able to eat seeds from tall crops, and hide in them!

The Swallow bird is very fond of large, open fields where they can spot and catch flying insects.

Summer! Swallows fly close to the ground to catch insects.

Farms can be surprisingly lively places

While Scotland is a hilly country, farms are found on flat ground near rivers.

On farms, there aren't many trees, deep valleys, mountains or tall structures. This is ideal for birds who prefer to stay on the ground, called 'ground-dwelling' birds.

The Wheatear is a small bird that you're also very likely to spot on farmland or in the flat countryside

They like to hop along the ground instead of flying, and sometimes they stay underground in rabbit holes

Summertime in fully-grown fields means they have lots of insects to eat!

Here is a Wheatear!
