Where do birds live?

View

Highland Perthshire has many tall mountains. There are 28 of the highest 282 mountains here (called Munros).

Not many birds live high up, but in winter there are a few who make it their home.

The Snow Bunting, named after its snowy 'plumage', is a large, arctic bird found in the Highlands.

It's a 'songbird' - like small birds in the garden. It gives the silent, wintery hilltops of Scotland the same sound as a chirpy woodland walk in the summertime

Outwith this season, Snow Buntings are in Canada, Greenland and Scandinavia.

Birds sometimes change their appearance with the seasons

They are easier to see when in Scotland because their white feathers turn brown in Winter.

Did you know: Snow Buntings live higher up than pigeons typically fly! Mallards migrate flying higher than Ben Nevis!

Since Scottish winters aren't extremely cold, Snow Buntings can find more seeds and insects in the Highlands than in very cold Canada and Norway.
