1. The Seven Domains of Deprivation

The 2019 English Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) comprises of seven different topics, each of which is weighted according to how much it is perceived to contribute to deprivation.

The income topic also has two supplementary indexes:

  1. Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI)
  2. Income Deprivation Affecting Older People Index (IDAOPI)

The weighting for each topic is:

Income - 22.5%

Employment - 22.5%

Education - 13.5%

Health - 13.5%

Crime - 9.3%

Barriers to housing and services - 9.3%

Living environment 9.3%

The index ranks four different geographies:

  • Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs) – these are units of geography smaller than Council wards and contain around 1500 residents. A rank of 1 indicates the most deprived LSOA, and of 32,844th the least deprived
  • Local Authority (LA) level, based on an aggregated version of the LSOA data, where a rank of 1 indicates the most deprived local authority area, and 317th indicates the least deprived
  • LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) area (ranked from 1-38)
  • CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) area (ranked from 1-191)
