Benefits of Internet & OER

Attachment

The internet has made it easier for everyone to share content across the world and for educators to share and adapt materials.

The idea of sharing resources is the basis of OER. These are resources with an open license, where the author or creator remains as the rights-holder but chooses which rights to retain and which rights to waive.

In an OER the creator allows users to access and reproduce the materials without cost and, under certain open licences, to adapt

or change the resource. however, the user does not need permission from the author to use the resource, except to reference it at the end of the usage to guard against plagiarism.

This has made many people all over the world, including my very self to gain a lot of experiences especially where there is no physical library to use. It has made learning to be very easy even right inside the bedroom or any part of the world.

Mobolaji - it is good to hear your enthusiasm for OER! Have you any specific examples of useful resources that you could share with colleagues on the course?

Thank you for answering Kris's question, Mobolaji. We will explore OERs further and more deeply later on in the course. I think it would be brilliant if you could share one very practical exemple or result of the impact in your students' practice.

Benefits of Internet & OER

The TESSA Teaching Practice materials had a lot of impacts on the student-teachers. Skills learnt made them to be engaged in:

  • Listening to their learners
  • Encouraging them to ask questions
  • Developing competency with different learning strategies
  • Working collaboratively with the students
  • Cooperative activity with their learners
  • Constructing knowledge jointly.
  • Making learners to be actively engaged in the Learning process, that is, no passivity as In teacher-centred Lessons.
  • Learners were given opportunity for a more interactive relationship With the subject matter of the lesson, generating ideas rather than simply receiving Knowledge
  • An active learning environment. Teachers facilitate rather than dictate the direction of learning.
  • Learning activities that involved the act of dialogue with self or with others, observing and doing things direct.

OERs

The process of creating and sharing OER is the best giveback that a teacher can achieve.

It also gives opportunity for service learning where the creater learns more insights into the naunces of creating learning resources and honing their knowledge of the content while contributing to Knowledge fo all to use

I think that as teachers and educators we need to engage with OER very critically. I believe that as any other resource, they need to be appraised to decide

  • whether they meet the objectives of our teaching / learning sessions
  • how they will be incorporated in the learning programme
  • whether  they need adaptation.

Later on in the course, the OER cycle provides a model for describing the process of selecting, adapting and using an OER for a learning episode.

Great one indeed. Also, the user does not need permission from the author to use the resource, and this has benefited lots of researchers , including myself aswell.
