Communities of Practice

Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger are often credited as the founders of the Communities of Practice (CoP) Model.

A CoP has three defining features:

  • A shared domain/areas of interest.
  • A sense of community.
  • Shared Practice.

Questions:

1.  Where might you have encountered or been involved with a community of practice beyond the classroom?

2.  As educators, how far do we go in demonstrating the behaviours of a Community of Practice?

3.  Our learners simply by virtue of being on the same course share a common interest.  But how can we encourage them to develop a sense of community?  How can we encourage them to share practice and learn from each other?
