I think blogging is an excellent method of engagement for students which is now being picked up in a number of disciplines such as Sociology and Criminology.
I first experienced blogging as a 4th year undergraduate in Social Policy which is a topic I struggle to engage with as a student. I find the material dry and uninteresting and usually portrayed without experiences that I would find relevant to my life.
Whereas, I was able to fully express myself on a subject whilst blogging regarding housing policy in Scotland and have continued to use blogging in to my, now complete, masters degree to discuss drug treatment for prisoners in Scotland. Both of which have been some of my highest graded work. Which I feel was because I could engage with the subject and convey my thoughts whilst still recognising the importance of grey literature and academic matter via hyperlinks.
As a non-educator, I would recommend blogging as a learning tool as it made a great difference to my own learning experience.
