This is a sample lesson plan which you can compare with your own. It is based on teaching Scots language using the Rhoda Bulter poem ‘Da International Press’ as shown in the video above.

LITERACY: Listening and Talking 

  • Listen to the poem for enjoyment and discuss its meaning 
  • Why is the poem called the “international press”? 
  • Discuss the double meaning of the title and why it is effective 
  • Show understanding by answering literal, inferential and other kinds of questions regarding its content, structure and choice of vocabulary

NUMERACY 

  • Using the internet, or other sources, find out how much each food item mentioned in the poem would cost 
  • Add up the total cost of the “international press”?

SCIENCES: Planet Earth 

  • The items in the international press come from all over the world 
  • Calculate the “food miles” involved in bringing the various items from across the world to Shetland

SOCIAL STUDIES: People, Place and Environment 

  • Put stickers on a map of the world and a map of Shetland to show where all the food has come from 
  • Research the effect that the food miles covered by these journeys has on the environment - Research the various different types of transport involved 
  • Is there anywhere on the map you’ve never heard of? Which places have you visited - Research Fair Trade and some of the foods involved in the poem
