Welcome to Number Confidence for Everyday Life | Multiply Highland, 3:30

Hello and welcome to Number Confidence for Everyday Life.

This online resource was developed to support Highland Multiply, an adult numeracy programme funded by the UK government and delivered on behalf of Highland Council by UHI North, West and Hebrides.

Highland Multiply online resources are designed to complement in-person Multiply sessions in Northern Scotland but they may also be useful or interesting to anyone who wants to develop essential numeracy skills.

This resource is one of a collection of essential numeracy modules developed on OpenLearn Create. The content and activities focus on number confidence for everyday life and should help you to: read and input numerical data on household objects and printed or digital media, choose and use operations to solve everyday problems, measure spaces and resources in home improvement and hobby projects, and use essential numeracy skills to support and connect with family and friends.

The resource is structured into three main parts: Getting started, the Resource library and the Activity zone.

You can work through the resources in chronological order like a course if you want to but the module is designed primarily for those who want to dip in and out as needed.

Most of the activities and content are scenario based, inspired by realistic everyday situations, with a Scottish Highland theme. Many of the scenarios and activities take place in our fictional Highland coastal town of Portimadie, where numeracy plays an important part in community life.

The Resource library contains interactive workbooks which are helpful for when you want to revise and check your knowledge. There is a handy glossary of essential vocabulary for numeracy, and sign posting to useful online resources elsewhere on the web.

When you feel ready to practice and assess your developing skills, you should go to the Activity zone. Here you will find a multiple choice quiz. The quiz will give you feedback on your answers and sign post you back to resources in the library if needed.

And finally when you're ready to assess your competence against the learning outcomes for this module, you should open up the Mathemap. The Mathemap is an interactive map of Portimadie. Choose and click on one of the five map points to take on a scenario based challenge. Each challenge will require you to use a combination of numeracy skills to complete a multi-step task. When you have completed all five challenges you can generate a certificate of completion.

At the end of the resource you will also find tips and ideas for developing and maintaining your new skills, with signposting to other useful resources.

We hope you enjoy this online learning resource.
