Lifelong Identity vs. Legal Term

Care experience doesn’t stop at 18, 21, or 26 - it’s a lifelong part of a person’s identity. The legal definition provides access to services, but it doesn’t define the whole experience. Care is about relationships, memories, and belonging, not just systems and timelines.

Beyond the Legal Definition

Being care experienced isn’t just a box to tick - it shapes identity for life. While legal terms help with access to support, they don’t tell the full story. Care isn’t something you “age out” of - it influences relationships, opportunities, and self-perception long after the system steps away.

How to Support Lifelong Identity

  1. Prioritise Relationships – Strong connections (family, friends, community) shape identity and belonging.

  1. Listen First – Everyone’s experience is unique. Don’t assume the legal term defines their story.

  1. Stay Flexible – Just because the system stops recognising them doesn’t mean their needs disappear.

  1. Highlight Strengths – Care experience isn’t just about challenges—acknowledge resilience and success.

  1. Ensure Continuity – Support shouldn’t drop off at a set age. Systems should evolve as people do.

A lifelong approach means seeing care experienced individuals as whole people—not just a legal category.
