Model Answer Unit 2, Activity 3.1 The Amazing Fertility of the Older Mind

The brain has the ability to learn and master many new skills, regardless of age. The effort of learning something new maintains and enhances your overall cognitive health.

Neuroscientists thought that we lose much of our brain’s neuroplasticity when we age but research has shown that substantial progress is still possible in many different fields, and adults may find that they developed skills that help learn in older age, such as a greater capacity for analysis, self-reflection and discipline.

The adult brain is far more fertile than expected, and keeping in shape seems to be particularly important for maintaining plasticity, as exercise helps to release neurotransmitters and hormones that are known to promote the growth of new brain cells and synapses.

Older learners may be faced with psychological barriers to learning such as lack of confidence or they may underestimate the power of the memories but if you can break through those psychological barriers to learning, you may see some widespread and profound benefits, including a sharper mind overall.
