Model Answer, Unit 2, Activity 6
This is a model answer. You might have developed different ideas.
Step A: My learner is a 72-year-old man from Glasgow. He has just been diagnosed with dementia but is still living at home. He has a carer who comes in every day to help him with some household tasks. Overall, he is quite cheerful but sometimes he seems lonely and depressed. He is very worried about his health deteriorating further. He is keen to learn a language to give his brain a workout and he hopes to train his memory this way, too.
He has travelled a lot, speaks French very well and a little bit of Spanish. He is a complete beginner in German, but he has travelled to Germany and Switzerland for skiing holidays in the past. He has also been to visit his cousin in Munich and enjoyed this. He would like to learn German.
Step B: I have planned 2 activities.
First, I would like to focus on greetings, saying where we are from, and asking how we are feeling. I would like to cover greetings for different times of the day (Guten Morgen, Guten Tag, Guten Abend, Gute Nacht), how to ask someone's name (and how to reply), how to ask someone how they are (and how to reply) and asking where someone is from (and replying).
Second, I would like to look at a map of Europe with my learner where all the countries are written in German. We can talk about where he has been, practise asking each other where we are from, and practise saying some city or country names in German.
Step C: I think these would be person centred activities because my learner would like to learn German and he has happy memories of travelling to German-speaking countries. We can also have some fun pronouncing a few names of cities or countries in German. I think that some of these will be familiar to him but there will also be some new information. I am hoping that this will increase his wellbeing because it should not be too difficult, and there will still be some new input.
I am planning to give him the map after the session so he can look at it again over the next week, and I have set up a quizlet set of the words and phrases for the activities to practise greetings.
I will revise what we covered at the start of the next lesson and in subsequent lessons. Maybe I will look for songs or videos that use the vocabulary we learned and share them with him.
