Model Answer, Unit 3, Activity 2.1, How does Alzheimer's affect Memory?

Student A: I think as part of my lessons I will talk about their past experiences and the people they love as much as possible, and enjoy the moments when unexpectedly someone interrupts the flow of a lesson to recall a nice memory or person in their life.

Student B: The participants were all really concerned about not forgetting personal relationships. For the language sessions revisiting older memories is likely to be more successful and more positive/less anxiety inducing. Also by going back to those memories it may help to preserve them for longer. Perhaps recalling activities done with family and friends would be particularly useful.

Student C: I believe that encouraging learners to recount their memories about their families and friends would be very useful. I think it could be a very worthwhile topic even asking learners to bring in/show their photographs of their loved-ones (I know my gran loves showing everyone who walks into her house all her photographs). I also think group work is an important part of learners’ experience as languages are ultimately communication tools and studies have shown people have lower rates of social isolation and associated problems are less likely to be affected by dementia.

Student D: I am still amazed how the brain is capable of preserving memories from the past. On the video, all the participants had vivid recollections of their childhood and moments that were important to them. Difficult moments were also remembered. Perhaps, as human beings, sad moments are something that we want to forget or to remember less, however our brain treats this information as very important.

Finally, I understood that we should incorporate family connection to our classes. After watching this video, I would like to introduce the topic of " family" earlier than I'd originally planned. In my view, this would help the class and aid the connection between a new language and the daily life of our learners.
