Model Answer Unit 5, Activity 3.0, Step A, Using Role Play for In-the-moment Experiences

This is a model answer. Your notes might be different. Here are some advantages we found.

  • Learners can take on a decision making persona that might let them diverge from the confines of their normal limitations or boundaries. A role-play scenario might, for example, allow a senior learner who is hard of hearing to become a young opera singer.

  • Learners can also transcend the limitations and confines of their care situation.

  • Both care worker and senior learner are treated as equals in the role-play. They can, for the duration of the game, transcend their usual roles of carer and person who is cared for.

  • The way role-plays offer new identities beyond the confines of the here and now may provide opportunities for care workers and senior learners to connect in “in-the-moment experiences”.

  • Both care worker and senior learner can use new learning content and see immediately if it has been understood.

  • Learners can be creative and imaginative and learn content in a deeper way. They often remember the roles they played longer, too.
