Model Answer Unit 3.3 Activity 3B
This is a model answer with reference to songs within the ‘Families, friends and festivals‘ section of the Scotland's songs section of the Scots Language Centre’s Education resources. You might have noted down other aspects and used a different selection of songs.
A learning activity suitable for use with ‘Ye Canny Shove Yer Grannie’ would be to participate actively in song and rhymes (LIT 0-01a/ LIT 0-11a/ LIT 0-02a). I would assess understanding by observing whether children can use hand gestures to enact pushing (push push); wave hello (Hullo grannie), rub their tummies (yum, yum); scratch their tummies (scratch scratch). This would demonstrate their ability to participate actively in songs.
An additional activity that could be effective would be substituting the word grannie with the name of another relative, carer or friend, e.g. ‘Ye canny shove yer Auntie/Father/Mammy/freen aff a bus’. This activity would demonstrate their ability to listen and respond to others appropriately and share ideas with a wider audience.
Another approach to assessing learning could be that the children could teach their parent or carers the corresponding hand gestures for each part of the song. Links to the song could be sent home, and we could encourage the use of videos or pictures in demonstrating the child’s learning.
Another approach would be to use images on the board to assess whether the child could match the image with the vocabulary, e.g. a grannie, a mammy, a plate of mince and tatties.
