- To see how common comorbidity is in general population studies.
- Digest the relationship between substance use and mental health problems.
- See the association between traumatic events and substance use.
- Understand the statistical methods used in the epidemiology.
- Debate the motion: 'not everybody who has experienced trauma needs or wishes to have trauma treatment'.
- Finally, discussion with your study group or mentor about the importance of trauma as a common precursor of substance use and how epidemiology is informative.

Start this topic by having a look at Comorbidity Research...
- Have a look at the pop-ups 'What is an odds ratio' and 'What is an effect size' - it helps to understand the tables
- Population studies are expensive and so conducted infrequently, but there is no reason to suppose that comorbidity associations change dramatically over time - take note of the prevalences
- Watch the video by Prof Paul Fletcher (it is quite a long but fascinating talk about psychosis)
- Take in the table about severity of addiction and associations with mental illness and also the table about personality disorder and mental illness associations
- Read about trauma and substance use and see the table of associations
- Finally have a look at how good comorbidity interventions are
