OpenLearn, the Open University’s open educational resource website, has merged with Open2.net, the OU / BBC learning portal. The result is this spanking new site containing all the usual links to LearningSpace study units with the added bonus of existing materials from the open2.net site, as well as podcasts from iTunes U. You'll also be treated to a bunch more content covering a range of areas and topical news.

We’re launching the new site in beta, meaning that it is still very much in development. We have lots still to do, but feel we have enough ready to make it a useful and interesting site. We hope you agree. We very much welcome your feedback. If you have any thoughts, please leave a comment using the facility near the bottom of this page. And if you have further questions about the new OpenLearn site, please visit the rest of our About OpenLearn pages.

We look forward to your thoughts!

Typing Errors

Alan Duffy

I refer to Natalie Kehr's posting 'Where should errata be posted' of the 5th Sept. 2010.

Having registered for M332-1 in January 2009 my initial enthusiasm was somewhat diminished by the number of typing errors I detected within section 2 of the course material, this being the first detailed section of the course. The errors relate to the SAQ's and corresponding answers and attempting to answer the questions listed I found difficult enough without having doubts about the integrity of the material. I posted my concerns on the unit forum associated with the course on 7th January 2009 after searching to no avail for a more appropriate location to express my concerns. To this date I have had no feedback from anyone within the OpenLearn Team and the material still contains the errors that I found; The specific detail can still be found within the unit forum of the course.

Have hunted everywhere for the 'help and support forum' but to no avail. Have come back to open learn after a long break and have made two entries into my learning journal today after clicking on new entry. No 'save' button appeared and when I clicked on add new entry, I lost all the notes I had made. Re-read the quickstart guide again and cannot see what I should have done differently. Please help.

Y156_2 Understanding children : Babies being heard

Elaine Brindley

I started studying this unit with a view to maybe taking the full course. When I went back to continue a week later it had disappeared from the site. I used the only contact link I could find but it was for the main Open University site so they said they could not help me, just sent me a lot of links whick either did not work or did not seem relevant. This is the only place I have found to communicate with you.

I know all the content is free but it's not very encouraging to start studying something and then not be able to finish it, especially as I am rather undecided about further study on the topic and hoped the rest of the unit would help me make up my mind.

Hi Elaine, Many apologies for

Openlearn Moderator

Hi Elaine,
Many apologies for the delay in replying, I've passed on your query to the LearningSpace team and they are working on the problem. As soon as the unit has been restored I'll let you know.
Many thanks for alerting us to this.

Lost records of activity

Aimee Cossins

I have been using the site since 2008, mostly for business & management modules, which have been great. Have just looked and many of my statements of activity now read 0% complete when I have (fortunately) got printed older statements of 100% completion. Others are anywhere from 5-88%, all of which i had finished. Only the module I did most recently (but still on the old site) reads 100% - why is this? Is this due to the new site or is there a time limit on recording completion? Is there any way to restore the records? Thanks

Hi Aimee, Many apologies for

Hi Aimee,
Many apologies for the delay in writing to you, however I'm still waiting for a reply from our technical team. I have re-sent the query and hope to have a solution by the end of the week.

Can't enter profile info

Lesley Boyd

Hi. Just joined 'Managing Complexity: a Systems Approach', and tried to update my profile with a bit more detail including optional info, learning interests and a photo, and when I click 'Update Profile' it clears the screen and loses all my entries. Tried this two or three times to check. Obviously not motivating for someone trying to join in....

Hi Lesley, Sorry you are

Hi Lesley,
Sorry you are having trouble updating your profile. Could you possibly try again as I've just updated my personal page and it seemed to work. It may have been a glitch in the system over the weekend that has sorted itself out. If you are still having problems please e-mail us on openlearn@open.ac.uk and I can forward the e-mail onto our technical team who will look into it for you.

Sport and Fitness content

Elizabeth Camp

Hi, I was looking for the content related to sport and fitness. I eventually found it, but it wasn't easy! I have two comments I'd like to make - firstly, it is very long winded to get to it as it's under Body and mind - Childhood and Youth - Health - Sport and Fitness. That's 4 layers down! In any event, why is Childhood and Youth under Body and Mind????? It is a section of the OU with its own degree so I can't see why it wouldn't be a top level subject area.

Secondly, there are 2 modules of study from each of E112 and E233 (sport and fitness modules) on the Learning Space. But none of these show up in Open Learn under the Sport and Fitness section. I have no idea if they are elsewhere as you cannot search on module codes in this bit of the site. Other areas, such as languages, have the Learning Space content at the top of the page when you go into the Open Learn content.

Finally, I've had to contact you through this feedback page as there is no email address to send comments to that I can find. This would be really helpful as some people may wish to contact Open Learn without having their comments public.
thanks,
Liz

Searching for a module by its code

Steve McDowell

How do I find materials for a module using its code?

On the old site, it was easy: just put it in the 'Search Units' box.

Withb this one, even when materials exist for a module, the only search box I can see comes up with nothing. I've just tried E301, U211 and U212.

Am I missing something really simple?

If there isn't anything really simple, why not?

Searching for a module by its code

Openlearn Moderator

Hi Steve
Thank you for your feedback. You've got a good point.

We're sorry you're having problems with searching the site - at the moment, we've not been able to unify the search for LearningSpace with the search for the rest of OpenLearn. It's frustrating, and we are working on that.

To search for free modules, you can you still use the original LearningSpace search engine, which can be found here: http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/course/search.php

Hi Lorna, Sorry for your

Openlearn Moderator

Hi Lorna,
Sorry for your disappointment at having missed the water programme - you can still catch it on BBC iPlayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00w8cll/sign/The_Foods_that_Make_B...

Our listings page is updated to show the current week's listings and can always be found at http://www.open.ac.uk/openlearn/whats-on/ou-on-the-bbc-week - at present, we don't have the resources to update the listings page every time a programme has been broadcast but are looking into ways we can automate the process. Remember, if you follow The Open University on Twitter - twitter.com/openuniversity - you'll get a message about an hour before our programmes appear on TV or Radio.

Open courses for Secondary School Teachers

Bernat Martinez

Hi,

I find the OpenLearn experience to be very innovative and useful, but for secondary school teachers is somewhat limited, specially if they want to use the material, as is, with young students.

Inspired by the OpenLearn approach we have developed at ITEMS EU project (http://itemspro.net/es/moodle/) some science and maths modules aimed to secondary students which can be used downloaded and reused for teachers following the OU initiative.

Do you think we could upload ITEMS moodle courses to the OpenLearn site for sharing?
or this is not the right place for this question?
Thanks

Hi Bernat,
We would be more than happy for you to upload you material on to OpenLearn, the area where this can be achieved is called LabSpace http://labspace.open.ac.uk/,=. We also have a quick start guide to creating content on LabSpace which is here http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=3416. If you need to speak to anyone about putting your material up please feel free to contact us via the OpenLearn mailbox - openlearn@open.ac.uk - and we will be happy to talk you through any queries you may have.

The new Open Learn site

Tereza Shortall

Sorry, I've given this site only one star - it is quite horrendously complicated and confusing. And I do not think the problem lies with me - I already have a higher degree, and have used the old Open Learn which was fine. But - I have tried to find a basic course on Music, and got a pig's breakfast of TOTALLY unrelated suggestions. Moreover, most of the material consisted of articles/discussions, rather than the old mini-courses which were such a brilliant feature of the old OpenLearn.
You have unnecessarily complicated a site which worked well and was both useful and user-friendly. This one is just a mess; you can't find anything and if you do find something it is almost 90% guaranteed to be something you do not want.
Sorry, but it really is quite awful!
Regard
Tereza Shortall

Hi Tereza,Thanks for you

Openlearn Moderator

Hi Tereza,
Thanks for you comments, we are still in beta and working on the site, so all comments are very welcome.
I believe you were looking for LearningSpace, which you can find through the all of the OpenLearn pages under "Looking for LearningSpace?" which is below the main OpenLearn banner in the top right hand corner.  It's not very clear at the moment but that should change soon, in the meantime the direct link through to LearningSpace is http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/.
Many thanks and I hope you enjoy the units.

site navigation

Elizabeth Camp

Hi

just wanted to add my agreement to Tereza's comments. I came in her a few months ago and couldn't make head or tail of the site! I gave up then but as a member of OU staff I have now returned because I wanted to check which of the modules I manage is already on here. It is only after 20 minutes of faffing around I have finally realised that this bit of the Open Learn site is different from the Learning Space, which is where the modules can be found.

If you do a Google search for Open Learn it does not come up with this site at all, only the Learning Space. I'm unclear what this new bit is actually for.

When you do a search on this bit of the site the list that comes up is very difficult to filter correctly. The entries don't mention module codes. I am still not sure if what comes up on a search here is actually the same as what comes up in the Learning Space!

Liz

Hi Liz, At the moment this

Openlearn Moderator

Hi Liz,
At the moment this side of the site is still in Beta testing so we aren't open to Google yet - we will be soon though. This side of OpenLearn is an amalgamation of both the Original OpenLearn and Open2.net which will be closing soon and so we are still trying to iron out the search facility etc. When we come out of Beta the path into LearningSpace and the search facility will be clearer to enable users to find exactly what they are looking for.
Many thanks for your comment Liz.

Starting a new discussion

In the <a href="http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=2909">Forum QuickStart Guide</a> it says "click on the button that says 'Start a new discussion'." I haven't been able to find such a button anywhere. Is this one of the features that hasn't been implemented yet, or have I missed it?

I am just considering coming back to learning after a lifetime of fear of learning, at the moment this website compounds the fear, it does not seem logical and makes me feel stupid, I can't even find the forum to introduce myself and have no clue as to what I am on here ?
There just seems to be too much stuff all over the place, I am sure if you have an OU degree in IT it will be a breeze but for me it is just enhancing my fear of learning.
Sorry Guys if I am ranting in the wrong place.
Rob.

Sandra Robinson

Thank goodness you wrote this! It means I'm not alone. I haven't a clue how to find my module, my StudentHome Module tab is telling my I'm not studying anything (I am!) and my profile says I'm 'signed in as a tutor or other member or staff' - I'm not!
My study books look lovely, but this website just makes me want to cry!

Hi Sandra,
Sorry you are having problems accessing your LearningSpace modules.  The link to the LearningSpace section of OpenLearn is under the OpenLearn banner - top right hand corner of the page, entitled 'looking for LearningSpace', the direct link is http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/, from here you should then be able to access all your previous modules/forums.
If you are looking for the Open University accredited courses the link is http://www.open.ac.uk/ which will take you direct to the OU homepage.
If you are still having problems accessing your LearningSpace modules please let us know either through comments or e-mail direct to openlearn@open.ac.uk.

By deep irony I found this thread when really i was looking for one (on starting out to learn) but I simply could not find my way back in. It seems from this that although am really struggling as an OU newby even experienced hands get lost. Am thinking when I go round the vast OU site(s) I will have to write down each step rather like going into a labyrinth but leaving a string trail as I go  - not the best analogy as I want to be able to get back in rather than find the ay out but you get the drift...
Is there a comprehensive & scalable / as needed  detailed (site) map?

Hi Kasper
You are right. Were is everyone? I just can’t get my head around this site. Were is Platinum member Fleetfoot, Spedley and monk. Guy’s please wave a flag if you are still out there.
The way I always used the site was either to just browse other people’s threads or ask a question myself and then get a response.
I just want to look at a list of subjects and click in and out.
I thought that this was one of the reasons for the site existing. Why has this been made so difficult to do?
John777

Lost, but not alone

George Dishman

Hi John,
I'm still here in a way but this site is virtually unusable. I happened to check this thread just because I passed a bookmark and looked out of curiosity, scanned the recent contributions and noticed the mention of my old posting handle.
There seems to be no way to get a notification when anyone replies to any of my posts or even just a list of recent posts.
Making the best of a bad situation, I open the site, go to one of the lower levels such as "Physics and Astronomy", then use the filter at the top of the page to select "Comments". It only shows them ordered by quantity rather than date which is pretty useless but if you memorise how many there are for each topic, you can then look at threads where the number has increased since your last visit.
The method only works because almost nobody is posting anything. If you want to make an individual comment on the OU material, it's fine but it is impossible to use the site to hold a discussion on a topic resulting from the material as there is no way for anyone else to discover the thread.
I'll try to look back in here now and then but unless they put some serious changes into the site in response to the feedback, it's not going to be usable as a true forum, and I think they want to cut costs by eliminating that aspect so I don't expect it to improve.
Shame, I learned a lot from the discussions we were holding and the atmosphere was much more positive than general open sites.
best regards
George

John Hancox

Hi George
It’s great to hear from you.
I just can’t get over the feeling of being on a raft, lost at sea, and then finding an officer from the ship that went down floating on another raft.
So what’s the solution?
You are a much better navigator than me. Are there other islands out there? Forums that you know of (and participate in) that I can have a look at.
John.

Lost, but not alone

George Dishman

Hi John,
The only groups in which I am participating at the moment are two about astronomy and cosmology on Facebook. I might have a look for one on philosophy as I learned so much from the discussions on the old OU site, especially from Chris Jeynes. Things are very busy at work for me at the moment but that should get quieter in few weeks so I'm just dropping in to those groups occasionally. I'll let you know if I find any of interest.
best regards

I  work as an OU Adviser, and used to recommend that  potential students should go into openLearn and look at course materials, but I don't anymore because I can't find my way to any specific module, so how can they?  I feel swamped by the sheer quantity of  random material under each subject heading.  This new version of OpenLearn is certainly not an improvement.

I have just enrolled on a module which won't allow me access to the case study, asking for a password.  It suggests that I should have received a password from one of two people, and gives their names, but the links to them don't work - saying that they have chosen to keep their details private.

Kasper Veste

I'm obviously getting too old for this! It's taken me since August to find my way here from the old Reading with Open2 forum, where I had fun and found enlightenment with other enthusiasts. The new set-up doesn't seem to do what the old one did -- or is it just that I haven't got that far yet? And my old username seems to have gone too: what happened to Kasper? Some upstart named Steve seems to have muscled in.
Maybe I should go and lie down;it's almost time for my medication anyway!

And ...

Kasper Veste

... I can't upload a photo to my profile: the uplad [sic] link isn't actually a link. Is this an oversight, or is it deliberate?
