What are the prospects for cooperation or cooperation in the international system? Will states always be primarily concerned with their own security or is progressive change possible in international politics? Does it matter to international politics if states are democratic or not? And what is the importance of economic change, or gender relations to international politics? In the following seven films, some of the world's leading experts on international relations explore what determines how states and their agents behave in a globalised world and the different theories and analyses that have been developed to make sense of today's international system.
Track 1: Structural Realism
Professor John Mearsheimer from the University of Chicago discusses Structural Realism
I think Professor Mearsheimer has a point, but he is overlooking the fact that some states especially Western states have to at least appear to be following a rules based order, democracy, human rights, women's rights, consumer rights etc but these things become secondary on an international stage. And for those states that don't have these rules become a target of aggressions - sanctions/financial isolation etc
We're living in a time of might is right, despite domestically appearing to have rights. A recent example is the treatment of Palestine Action who have had their rights removed and branded terrorists despite not actually carrying out any terrorism. Even more current are the protests taking place in America regarding ICE and DHS curtailing people's right to protest. A person's right to protest essentially boils down to disagreeing with the policies of domestic governments.
I agree with Professor Mearsheimer China can't dominate without war, because America and it's vassals won't allow it to.
