Updated Wednesday, 23 September 2026

Do you want to find out more about Shakespeare, but don’t know where to begin? Use this collection to explore some of his best-known works, the world he lived in and how people have responded to his works over the years.

Find out more about The Open University's English courses and qualifications.

Shakespeare’s writings have enthused and inspired millions of readers and viewers over the past four centuries, speaking vividly to the concerns of a very wide range of audiences and cultures. His fame and prestige, however, and the very big gap between his time and ours, can make ‘Shakespeare’ seem more of an intimidating monument than a writer to enjoy. This is where OpenLearn’s Exploring Shakespeare comes in: whether you’re a Shakespeare expert or a Shakespeare novice, you will find something in this curated set of resources to stimulate and inform you!

You will find an overview of Shakespeare’s work, some provocative insights from critics, short videos on key literary topic and tips on studying plays in general. You will have the opportunity to analyse in detail one of Shakespeare’s best-known comedies and to get to grips with a masterpiece by his great rival Christopher Marlowe and Shakespeare’s favourite writer, the Roman poet Ovid. There is even an introduction to the role of dogs in Shakespeare!
