An introduction to music research
In this free course, An introduction to music research, we have gathered together materials to allow you to explore the ways in which music may be researched. After thinking about different kinds of musical knowledge and their relationship with various musical practices (including performance, composition, and listening), you'll be introduced to some of the digital resources and methodologies that inform music research. The next section, which constitutes the main part of the course, explores a variety of different resource types that can be the focus for music research including diaries, composer manuscripts, images, and instruments before the final section introduces you to a contentious area of current scholarship: the relationship between music and politics.
Course learning outcomes
After studying this course, you should be able to:
- understand the ways in which musical knowledge may shape certain musical practices
- identify the role digital methodologies play in music research
- use, and make sense of, a number of online databases
- understand the relevance of various different kinds of document for the study of music
- understand something of the contentious relationship between music and politics, and its implications for the study of music.

I felt very happy: till today, classical music can be popularized in local - different corners of the world. And local library can store for non-profit usage, and for public appreciation. Further more, the stance of 4.3 and 4.4 - about Nazi and Beethoven in this course towards which I took my stance - making a small criticism and argument to, suddenly appeared in my mind. I touched its peak & celebrating part - single vocal, then four people, and then a group with chorus children... in a sequence... I had also watched its performance right after and for the remembrance of the fall of 1989 Berlin Wall...People were happily celebrating 'Wall's Down in both the reality and between two ideologies', then sang tunes of 'Ode To Joy'... Still, I cannot recognize it's from Beethoven's Nazi spirit, but a true love to all human beings in the equality Beethoven cannot get true love from lovers, his nephew, his other family members and the classed society in that time, but contributed his true love through music to all people... Finally, all people understood him and repaid their small loves to him - 20000 people's funeral and many annual performances until today... He, oh, Lord's poor boy, can smile... It's not near Nazi, but near heaven... and near Big Sunshine of humanity... That's my developing idea, from this course. Thanks!
