How are empires ruled? How do military, economic, logistic and cultural constructs combine to create 'systems of empire'? This free course, How do empires work?, introduces these questions by briefly sketching in the dramatic events of the Anglo-Chinese conflict over Hong Kong from 1839 to 1842.
Course learning outcomes
After studying this course, you should be able to:
understand what a 'system of empire' is
understand the key components – economic, military, logistic and cultural – which can help to make up a system of empire.
a good Overview of 'empires'.
Something I'd like to remember for future reading on the various conflicts worldwide which are developing currently.
4 lenses to understand them: military, economic, bureaucratic, cultural.
The map could have been larger, or being able to click on it and expand it, would have helped; it really is too small to read the text & labels, and the colours used for the various rivers & canals are too similar to be distinguishable at the small size of the illustration.
'Figure 2' showing the ship is also on the wrong page; it is referred to in the text of the previous page.
I don't know whether course staff read these reviews.
I wouldn't drop a star though, just because of those problems; it really was a 5-star read, thank you.
