Week 1: Practising systems thinking in practice

Introduction

Miguel - can you write figure descriptions for the images in the course, for accessibility, screenreaders.

Welcome to the first part of this free course Practising systems thinking in practice (STiP). This course provides an introduction to the field of practice called systems thinking in practice, or STiP. Systems thinking is an alternative way of managing human interventions associated with socio-economic and environmental development. The ideas about reflection in this course invite you to use your own personal experience as a major resource.

Miguel - I’m thinking these three paragraphs below might be better placed in the overall course introduction (https://www.open.edu/openlearn/mod/oucontent/view.php?id=174024)?.

This OpenLearn course provides a sample of postgraduate study in STEM. It is based on Open University Module TB872.

Note: This short OpenLearn course cannot teach how to practice systemically, but it gives a general introduction to the field of the practice of systems thinking. The course complements the OpenLearn course Understanding systems thinking in practice. Together, these two courses introduce ‘doing’ systems thinking in practice.

Both these courses invite you to express your ideas in diagrams. The numerous short courses listed in the Systems Thinking Hub provide guidance on a range of systemic diagramming tools and techniques. You may find the resources below useful as you make your way through this OpenLearn course:

  1. Systems diagramming.
  2. Guide to diagrams
  3. Diagramming for development 1 - Bounding realities and Diagramming for development 2 - Exploring interrelationships
