2.4 Open Access publishing

The growth of digital communications and publishing has disrupted traditional models of academic dissemination. The old model of costly journal subscriptions and voluntary work by editors and peer reviewers is under pressure to justify costs to readers and libraries. Open Access is championed to encourage sharing research and ensure freely exchanged ideas and knowledge. Open Access publishing generally builds upon licensing systems such as Creative Commons.
