First steps: Things to consider when authoring a BOC

BOC terminology

The terminology used in BOCs derives from that on OpenLearn and can differ from what is used on formal OU modules. This can be a particular issue if you are re-using existing OU materials. So, please make sure that you use the correct terminology so that learners on the BOC know what to expect from such courses, particularly in relation to assessment and recognition. Some points about BOC terminology are given below.

Course

BOCs are referred to as courses. Avoid use of the word module, which is specifically associated with paid-for qualifications.

Learner

Everyone enrolled on OpenLearn or OpenLearn Create is described as a learner. Again, student is associated with paid modules and qualifications.

Recognition

OpenLearn and OpenLearn Create provide learners with opportunities for recognition, whether through the issuing of a Statement of Participation or a digital badge. None are associated with credit or accreditation, so, again, these words should be avoided. OpenLearn has specifically been asked by QA not to refer to Statements of Participation as certificates.
