2 Geographies of leadership
The spaces you occupy shape and inform the leadership that is possible. Spaces are largely shaped by economic and social forces – the kind of economies that are established in certain places and the types of cultures that build up around them. The people we interact with in our communities are in those spaces because of the conditions that brought them there: the opportunity for a job, proximity to family and friends, or the cultural pull of a particular area.
There are (at least) three scales at which you can think about leadership as shaped by geographical space: workplace, community and global. Each of these will now be explored in turn.
