4 Summary of Week 6

Leadership as position means practice that is shaped by position within an organisation, but also geographical position. It’s possible to practise leadership distinctively from various tiers within organisations. Leadership from senior positions can open opportunities for those who follow through mentoring, sponsorship, and shadowing opportunities. Leadership from the middle can connect. Leadership from below can challenge and generate creativity from conflict. Geographical perspectives show us that leadership can be shaped by, and in turn can shape workplace and community spaces. Important in practising spatially impactful leadership is the ability to move between conceived, experienced, and lived approaches to space. When you become more adept at seeing the geographies and spaces of leadership you will cultivate a spatial imagination, which is a crucial capacity for contemporary leadership.

You should now be able to:

  • identify and critically discuss the distinctive forms of leadership that tend to emerge from various organisational positions
  • consider and practise healthy conflict that leads people into a ‘mess’ of creativity
  • consider and practise leadership that works from and enhances the distinctive features of the geographical spaces in which you live and work.

Next week you will move from position to product, exploring how leadership and leaders are produced, and how notions of who should and should not occupy leadership positions can be challenged.
